How to not store historical data for wireless rogue APs

If NPM discovers many rogue APs on your wireless controllers, you can disable storing rogue AP records. In the Orion Polling Settings there is only a global setting for Wireless tables but not for Rogue APs only. To disable storing rogue AP data, you need to go to Advanced Settings.

Overview

If you do not need historical data for rogue access points (APs), disable storing the data. If you have many rogue APs, unnecessary records may consume a significant amount of database space. For example, with 260 million rogue APs, your Wireless Rogues table might include up to 250 million unnecessary records that might take up 70 GB.

Cause

Your environment has a lot of rogue APs discovered on monitored Wireless Controllers.
To verify that this is the case:
  1. In the Orion Web Console, click My Dashboards > Wireless, and select Controllers in the Group by list.
  2. Review the number of Rogue APs in the bracket.

Resolution

Configure NPM not to save historical data for rogue APs:

  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console, and paste the following into the browser, after the hostname or IP address of your NPM server:
    /Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx
    For example: http://<server_name>/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx
  2. Click the Global tab to apply the setting to all servers, or select a specific server.
  3. Locate the SaveRoguesToHistory setting and clear the box.

If SaveRoguesToHistory is selected, rogue data are stored. This is the default setting. If you clear the box, NPM does not store rogue AP data.

  4. Click Save.
  5. Restart the Orion Module Engine on the main polling engine or on any additional polling engines using the Orion Service Manager. See Shutdown and restart Orion services with the Orion Service Manager.
The rogue AP records are not stored anymore.
