After setting an IP Address to Used in IPAM it can change status to available after some time

Why is it that when I set IP addresses to 'Used' manually they can sometimes become 'Available'

Overview

Scenario:

User sets IP address to 'Used' in IPAM

After a period of time the IP address may appear as 'Available' and all data associated with the IP address will be removed.

Cause

By Design

  • IPAM scans the subnets added to IPAM every 4 hours by default.
  • If an IP Address is set to "Used" manually and subnet scanning is enabled, IPAM will scan the subnet, if there is no response from the IP Address, it will be marked as "Transient".
  • If there is no response from the IP Address for the duration of the "Transient period" (default = 7 days) the IP address will be marked as "Available" and the data associated with it will be removed.

Resolution

There are three options:

  1. Set the IP address to 'Reserved' instead of 'Used'.
  2. Disable scanning on the subnet or IP address.
  3. Set a higher Transient period. See: Change the transient period.
