Virtual Hosts are not properly assigned or missing as group members (nodes) to dynamic groups when assigning Server Application Manager (SAM) templates for SolarWinds Platform 2024.2 and below.

Overview

Prior to SolarWinds Platform 2024.2 and below, virtual hosts were not correctly assigned or missing from dynamic groups when assigning SAM templates. This required additional (manual) steps to uncheck "Assign this template only to the servers" for each group for the proper assignment option to appear.

No specific error message occurs to identify this problem.

Cause

This issue occurs because dynamic groups can only assign devices marked as nodes.  Virtual hosts are considered only as an entity, even if it was added as a node, causing these entities not to be assigned.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, please upgrade to SolarWinds Platform 2024.4 and above.

Starting in SolarWinds Platform 2024.4 and above, logic changes were made to add any entity that is already marked as a node.

If an upgrade is not possible, perform the following steps as a workaround:

  1. When you assign a template to a group, you can uncheck the Advanced setting to assign this template only to the servers in this group.

Hyper-V nodes are not servers, so when the option to assign the template to the servers is checked, the application templates will not be assigned to group members who are not servers.

  2. After unchecking that option, the Hyper-v nodes appear on the next screen.
