Overview

This article lists support for Windows Server and SQL Server by SolarWinds products version 2023.3 and earlier (or, for products with a different version numbering system, the version released in the first quarter of 2023). For later versions, see the system requirements for the specific product version.

Notes:

  • Orion Platform 2018.4 - 2019.4 products are not compatible with Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2012.
  • Orion Platform 2020.2 adds support for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 and for Microsoft SQL 2012.

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2016 or later, and Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2017, or later at your earliest convenience.

See this video for information on the advantages of upgrading Orion Platform products from a 2012 infrastructure.

*Including any service packs for the MS SQL Server version.

** These versions are supported only when the product is running on Orion Platform 2016.2 or later. Orion Platform 2016.2 is installed with NPM 12.0.1 and SAM 6.3. Later versions of the products will include newer versions of the Orion Platform which fully support these versions also.
***LEM 6.6 and later supports Windows Server 2019, but the OS is not displayed correctly. This issue will be resolved in a future release.

Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft SQL Server 2012 support

Important:

  • Orion Platform 2018.4 - Orion Platform 2019.4 products are no longer compatible with Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, and Microsoft SQL Server 2012.
  • Orion Platform 2020.2 added support for Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, and Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2016 or later and Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2017, or later at your earliest convenience.

** THWACK Blog: Preparing For Your Next Orion Upgrade - Deprecation & Other Things You Need To Know

If you have already upgraded, you may have seen one or more deprecation notices within the installer.

But what does it mean when a feature or software dependency has been deprecated? Does this mean it's no longer supported, or those versions can't be used anymore? Several customers throughout the years have requested advance notice whenever older operating systems and SQL Server database versions would no longer be supported in future Orion Platform versions, allowing them sufficient time to properly plan for those upgrades.

Deprecation does not mean that those versions can't be used, or that they are no longer supported at the time the deprecation notice is posted. The deprecated versions continue to remain fully supported, but future Orion Platform product releases will likely no longer support them. As a result, all customers affected by these deprecation notices should take this opportunity to begin planning their migrations if they wish to stay current with the latest releases.

So what has recently been deprecated?
