Windows Agent plug-in error with "A dependent prerequisite 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 14.25.28508 x86' failed to be installed"

This describes an issue where the Windows Agent installation is successful but upon plugin provisioning the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime fails to get installed.

Overview

When checking Agent status in website it presents Connection Status as Connected and Agent Status as Plug-in error

Plug-in details:

A dependent prerequisite 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 14.25.28508 x86' failed to be installed

In the AgentManagement.Service.log, the following error message may appear:
 

ERROR PluginManagementService - Error deploying plugin APM to agent 49. System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Cause

This issue occurs due to a conflict with the existing installation of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable.

 

Resolution

To workaround this issue, remove the conflict and reattempt plugin installation:
  1. Stop Agent service
  2. Uninstall 64bit and 86bit versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable
  3. Start Agent service
  4. Go back to Manage Agents in website and reinstall the JobEngine plugin first then followed by the other problematic plugins

Be aware you may need to attempt plugin installation twice and refresh the plugin details to get true plugin status
