Which logs to check when Orion Services flapping or failed to start

In this article you will learn which logs you should check when there is an issue related to Orion Services

This article also provides basic steps on to troubleshoot a SolarWinds Orion application that is down.

This article will cover the following key points:

You Opened Orion Service Manager and found 
  • Services or Service failed to start
  • Services or Service  already stopped
  • Services or Service stuck Stopping state 
  • Services or Service flapping
 
Important: SolarWinds strongly recommends creating a full system snapshot of the Orion database/Orion database server before upgrading or making significant system changes.

Check Windows Events for SolarWinds services
  • Go to Windows Events > Expand Windows Logs > Expand Application and Services Logs > Select SolarWinds.net > Filter for the Errors and check what type of errors you have there (services related events and issues)
  •  If you are unable to understand root cause of the error message, search the SolarWinds Success Center for more information.
 
 

Important log files and error messages/events to check

  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion\OrionWeb.log (Web Console related log file)
  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\InformationService\v3.0\ Solarwinds.InformationService.log (SolarWinds Information Service/SWIS log file) 
  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\JobEngine.v2\Logs (polling related log files)

Orion Service logs 

Orion logs are always available under the following locations (ProgramData is system hidden):

  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds
  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion

Example scenario

The Orion Job Engine is flapping and unable to start.

Open the log file below. Scroll down to the bottom of the file and check what type of error you receive when the service fails.

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\JobEngine.v2\Logs\SolarWinds.JobEngineService_v2_13.log

SolarWinds Information Service V3

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\InformationService\v3.0\Orion.InformationService.log

SolarWinds Recommendation Service is flapping

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Recommendations\Recommendations.Services.log

SolarWinds Cortex Service is flapping

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Cortex\cortex.log

Configuration Wizard logs

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion\ConfigurationWizard.log
