Unexpected Website Error in the Orion Web Console: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: xml

Overview

When accessing a view in the SolarWinds Web Console, the following error is displayed:

ERROR ASP.global_asax - (null)  Application_Error(1870abe72e5b49f3a7c67d5cd8dcc93b) System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: xml

Cause

There is a misconfigured widget on the view, such as a Custom Chart that has a "NULL" time frame specified. 

Resolution

Option 1

To resolve the issue, remove the widget, or resource, from the view:

  1. Navigate to Settings > All Settings > Manage Views.
  2. Select the view with the issue.
  3. Select the widget.
  4. Click the Delete button (trash can icon).

Option 2

Remove and add the widget again to the view:
  1. Open Orion Web Console
  2. Navigate to Settings > All Settings > Manage Dashboards/Views
  3. Select the view you wish to edit and click Edit
  4. Locate the widget that is causing problems and select it 
  5. Click Delete Selected Resources From Column X (it is a small trash can icon)
  6. Click DONE
  7. Navigate to Settings > All Settings > Manage Dashboards/Views
  8. Select the view you wish to edit and click Edit
  9. Click Add Resources To Column X (it is a small + icon)
  10. Locate the resource you wish to add and click ADD SELECTED RESOURCES
  11. Click DONE
