Observability

High w3wp.exe memory utilization (OutOfMemoryException)

In some environments during the website startup, the ApolloWebAPI ResourceLoader will load up duplicate localization libraries, causing the memory of the w3wp.exe process to spike and cause the website to be inaccessible, which may end up in an eventual out-of-memory crash, causing this process to start over again and repeat. While it's in this state, the website remains in a state of extreme slowness and inaccessibility.

Overview

During the website startup, the Apollo Web API ResourceLoader will load up duplicate localization libraries, causing the memory of the w3wp.exe process to spike and cause the website to be inaccessible, which may end up in an eventual out-of-memory crash, causing this process to start over again and repeat. While it's in this state, the website remains in a state of extreme slowness and inaccessibility.

You can find evidence of this problem in the ApolloWebApi.log

Hybrid Cloud Observability

Cause

This is caused by the thread that instantiates these resources being able to run more than once at startup, causing a huge load in memory, which causes website performance issues and potential crashes with out-of-memory.

Resolution

A fix for this issue was implemented in SolarWinds Platform 2025.2. Consider upgrading your environment.

If you can't upgrade, a buddy drop is available in two versions(2025.1 and 2024.2.1). Work with support and engineering to get and apply the buddy drop.
