Using Microsoft Office 365 application monitor templates in SAM

This article provides details about SAM's original Microsoft Office 365 application monitor templates that you can use to monitor and gather metrics for Office 365 subscription services. Decide which Office 365 URL you want to monitor, add a node with that web address in SAM, assign a template to the node, provide Office 365 credentials, and begin monitoring.

Overview

SAM includes several application monitor templates that you can use to monitor and gather metrics for your Office 365 services. Decide which Office 365 URL you want to monitor, add a node with that web address in SAM, assign a template to the node, provide Office 365 credentials, and you're ready to go.

Note: The following templates were deprecated in SAM 2020.2 due to Microsoft end-of-support for Basic Authentication in Exchange Online APIs. Consider using API poller templates instead.

    • Microsoft Office 365 Mobile Device Management
    • Microsoft Office 365 Portal

    Access Office 365 templates

To access Office 365 templates in the Orion Web Console:

    1. Click Settings > All Settings > SAM Settings > Manage Templates.
    2. Scroll down the list of filter tags and click O365.

    Use Office 365 templates

To begin using an Office 365 template:

    1. Review Microsoft Office 365 template requirements.
    2. Decide which URL you want to monitor. Examples include:
      • login.microsoft.com
      • api.admin.microsoftonline.com
      • outlook.office365.com
    3. Add a node for the URL you want to monitor.
    4. Select a polling method for the node.
To monitor the Up/Down status of Office 365 nodes, use ICMP and enable the Dynamic IP Address option so SAM can ping nodes even if IP addresses change. To monitor Office 365 applications on a node, select External as the polling method. See Microsoft Office 365 template FAQs for details.
    5. Assign an Office 365 template to the node.
Tip: PowerShell works well on polling engines that use Local Host as the Execution mode.
    6. Provide Office 365 credentials to connect.
    7. Starting in SAM 2020.2.5, apiversion=v1.0 is required in PowerShell scripts included in the Microsoft Office 365 Teams and Microsoft Office 365 OneDrive application monitor templates. Otherwise, scripts return [ERROR] The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. messages. Alternatively, use one of the Microsoft 365 API poller templates.
    8. For the following templates that use PSMSGraph, see Integrate Office 365 application monitor templates with Microsoft Graph for additional steps.

Note: Use UPN format (username@domain) to enter Office 365 credentials. Do not use domain\username format.
