Overview

In some cases, Serv-U suddenly stops working unknown reason. When a user tries to log in using FTPS on port 990, it just shows the following error below using Filezilla.

"Connection established, waiting for a welcome message"

Serv-U logs also show the following:

"Unable to establish SSL connection (CLIENT ERROR: Client may have rejected the SSL certificate)"

After getting this error, Serv-U Management console will become unresponsive and the only way to get access is to restart the service. Reinstalling Serv-U and reconfiguring the server settings from scratch does not help. Even reconfiguring the user settings.

Cause

  • The server where the home directory resides lost connection to the domain controller so it is not accessible from Serv-U server

Resolution

  • Do the test on the local server using FTP client or command line
  • This is to isolate possible network communication issue
  • Create a test account and set the home directory on the local drive
  • If the home directory set to a UNC path, make sure it is accessible from Serv-U server
  • Make sure Serv-U service account has permission to the home directory UNC path
