Use an SSH client to connect to your SEM Appliance

In addition to accessing your SolarWinds Security Event Manager (formerly Log & Event Manager) Virtual Appliance using the virtual console in your VM client, you can also access your SEM Appliance using a Secure Shell (SSH) client. This provides access to the command-line interface for the SEM Appliance over a secure, non-standard SSH port. 

Requirements 

• SSH client - You can use any SSH client to connect to your SEM Appliance. PuTTY is used in the following procedure because it is one of the most widely used SSH clients. It can be downloaded for free from the PuTTY Download Page (© 2017 Simon Tatham, available at https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/, obtained on November 26, 2018).
• Network access to the SEM Appliance over port 32022 from the computer you will connect from

1. Open PuTTY.
2. Enter the IP address or hostname of your SEM Appliance in the allotted field.
3. Enter 32022 or 22 in the Port field (if LEM version is 6.2.1 or earlier, only port 32022 is open).
   Note: To save this information for future use, click Save under Load, save or delete a stored session. In future sessions, select your saved session and click Load to complete the fields noted above.
4. Click Open. This will establish a secure connection with your SEM Appliance, and you will see its command-line interface.
   You can now log in to your appliance to perform a variety of functions on your SEM manager and database.
   Notes:
   • The user account to make changes or view data in the SEM Appliance is cmc and the password you set after activating your SEM license.
   • If you are evaluating SEM, the default password is password.
