"Unexpected Website Error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an Invocation." when trying to turn off Network Share for Impersonation in NCM Advanced Settings

NCM users cannot uncheck the option to use Network Share Credential for Impersonation under NCM Settings > Advanced Settings. An error of "Unexpected Website Error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an Invocation."

Overview

In NCM 2024.4 up to 2025.2, when users try to turn off Impersonation under NCM Settings > Advanced Settings > Network Share Settings and click submit, an error will be presented.

Uncheck the option in the red box:

After submitting the change, this error appears:

Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

Cause

The NCM job name or the "Save to File" file path contains illegal characters in the name: “, <, >, |

(Note: Double-quote, Greater than, Less than, and Pipe Characters)

Resolution

This issue is fixed in NCM 2025.4. Consider upgrading your environment. If you can't upgrade, use the workaround below.

 

Delete the NCM jobs that contain illegal characters in the job name or in the "save to file" filename/file path and recreate the job without the characters.
