Overview

Prior to SolarWinds Platform version 2023.4, users faced limitations in managing map visibility and editing permissions, which could impact collaboration and control. This issue is resolved in version 2023.4 and later, where an enhanced permission model allows flexible Private/Public map settings and ownership management for improved user access and security.

Resolution

Starting in SolarWinds Platform 2023.4 and above, the Orion Maps feature now aligns with the modern dashboards permission model, introducing enhanced control over map visibility and editing rights through ownership and permission settings.

  • Map Ownership and Visibility:
    • By default, a Map is private and visible only to its creator (owner) and administrators.
    • Maps can be set to Public or Private to control visibility.
    • Public Maps are visible to all users, while Private Maps remain restricted to the owner and administrators.
  • Permissions Overview:
    • Administrators can:
      • Manage all Maps, including creating, editing, deleting, and changing visibility.
      • Edit Maps owned by any user.
      • Change the ownership of any Map, granting edit rights to the new owner.
    • Non-admin users with “Manage Others Maps” permission enabled can:
      • Edit public Maps created by other users.
    • Non-admin users without “Manage Others Maps” permission can:
      • Create and edit only their own Maps.
      • Their public Maps are visible to all users but editable only by the owner or users with appropriate permissions.

How to Set Map Visibility:

    1. Navigate to Settings > Manage Maps.
    2. Select the desired Map.
    3. Click Set Visibility.
      • Choose Public to make the Map visible to all users.
      • Choose Private to restrict visibility to the owner and administrators.
    4. Click Save.
Once saved, the Map’s visibility and edit permissions apply according to these settings.  This model ensures secure and flexible management of Maps, empowering users to collaborate while maintaining control over their content.
