Overview

When adding a Meraki device to the SolarWinds Platform, it is added as an ICMP node. Additional configuration is required on the device to enable SNMP and allow SNMP polling in the SolarWinds Platform.

Cause

Most Meraki devices support SNMP but the amount of information is limited in comparison with traditional Cisco devices.

Resolution

Ensure the Meraki device has been configured to enable SNMP on the Meraki dashboard at Organization > Configure > Settings > SNMP, configure a community string at Network Wide > Configure > General, and add the SolarWinds Main Polling Engine IP to the allow list at Security & SD-WAN > Configure > Firewall > WAN appliance services. Please see Meraki's documentation on SNMP Overview and Configuration for further information.

Once SNMP has been enabled, the node may be either added to SolarWinds as an SNMP node, or if the node is already added as ICMP, the polling method may be changed to SNMP.

Add an SNMP Node

  1. Login to the SolarWinds Web Console.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Manage Nodes > Add Node.
  3. Add the node's hostname or IP, select SNMP for the polling method and add the required details for either SNMPv2c or SNMPv3.
  4. Complete the Add Node Wizard and confirm the node is added and polling as expected.

Edit an existing node

  1. Login to the SolarWinds Web Console.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Manage Nodes and select the check box next to the name of the existing node.
  3. Select Edit Properties, and change the polling method to SNMP.
  4. Add the SNMP port and string and submit the change.
Please see Change the polling method for a node for more information.
