SolarWinds SNMP Walk: A new tool for collecting SNMP MIB walks in the SolarWinds Platform

It is often required to gather an SNMP Walk from a customer's device and submit to support in order to troubleshoot an issue for missing or inaccurate stats especially for Networking devices or any devices polled via SNMP. This article throws some light on what this tool does and how to use it.

Overview

Rather than relying on third-party tools for this, Solarwinds have an easy to use, lightweight tool included within most of SolarWinds Platform products and is also available for download by customers (for use with older releases).

Latest version of Solarwinds Platform products ships with MIB walker tool (popularly known as SNMP walk) which is in C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion \SnmpWalk.exe on your Main Poller or Additional Poller as well.

You can also download it from
SolarWinds SNMP Walk to run directly from your desktop.

Benefits:

  • Easy to use - Windows GUI.
  • Flexible - no installation required, just download and run.
  • Reliable - improved support of devices that have some issues in SNMP implementation.

Known limitations:

  • IPV6 is currently not supported
  • SNMPv1 is currently not supported
  • SNMP v3 Context configuration is not supported

Requirements:

  • Device being troubleshot must be able to reach the SolarWinds server that is going to poll
  • SNMP Credentials / Community String
  • SNMP Port 161 open and not blocked by any intermediary firewall if any.

How to use SNMP Walk Tool:

  1. Log in to the Main Poller OR Additional poller that is supposed to poll the device you are troubleshooting.
  2. Open SNMPWalk.exe, by default at either C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion in environments running 2020.2.6 or older, or C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion in environments running 2022.3 and newer.
  3. Enter IP Address, Community String, SNMP Port, and select SNMP version. If using SNMPv3, enter the SNMPv3 authentication details. The details used should be the same as those used in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console to monitor the device.
  4. Click Scan - here you will be prompted to choose a location to save the MIB file. The scan can take a while depending on Device types and MIB size.
  5. After the scan is complete open the file and compares the OIDs supported by the device against those the SolarWinds Platform polls, and compare the values returned to those reported in the Web console.
