Cause

Important: SolarWinds strongly recommends creating a full system snapshot of the Orion database/Orion database server before upgrading or making significant system changes.
 

Please collect Orion Diagnostics before following the steps in order to understand the root cause of the issue
Also please make sure you have Snapshot or System backup just to be safe side . 


There might be multiple reasons where Configuration Wizard performance issues or failure can be tracked using below method.

Resolution

You can track and watch live Configuration Wizard Activity we need to map the Configuration Wizard log file from the Poller where Configuration Wizard is running we need to install Kiwi Log Viewer . 
 

How to install Kiwi Log Viewer 
Default location installation (Install directory ) In case you have installed Solarwinds application on another drive please check 

C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Kiwi_LogViewer_2.1.0_Win32.setup.exe

Once installation done. Click on open Configuration Wizard log file you wish to watch and track the activity and Errors during this activity .

Configuration wizard logs (ProgramData is system hidden):

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion\ConfigurationWizard.log

Make sure you change the file type to All files.




Select your log file and open
 

Create filter for your Errors (Make sure you type caps looks (ERROR)
Click on "Highlight" icon 

Then 



Click on the Tail icon to view the live and last activity for Configuration Wizard 




Lines with ERROR will be highlighted here is an example below. 



You can easily track the Time and Date and current activity on Configuration Wizard log 

TIP :  There might be more than one Error . In case you have any Error reported check all the Errors there might be another Error above which is possible root cause .

Orion Service logs 

Orion logs are always available under the following locations (ProgramData is system hidden):

  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds
  • C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion
 

Which logs i should check while upgrading or installing Orion ?
When running upgrade from centralized upgrade (Web Console ) 
C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Administration\AdministrationService.log

When Running the Installer executable


C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Installer\OrionInstaller.BootStrapper.log

Installer logs

Solarwinds installation / Upgrade log file

C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\Installer\__Dated__Folder__\AdministrationService.Client

 

Example scenario

The Orion JobEngine is flapping and unable to start.

Open the log file below. Check  the Tail of file and check what type of error you receive when the service fails.

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\JobEngine.v2\Logs\SolarWinds.JobEngineService_v2_13.log
