Overview

The WPM Playback service utilizes local users (or domain users) for playing back transactions. If there is no available user, the transaction will fail to playback and enter an unknown status. This will display a gray within the Orion web console. You may also see a rise in the Player Load value.

Agent Service logs will display:
2020-03-20 09:27:31,597 [WorkerProcessMonitor] ERROR SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.WorkerProcessManagement.WorkerMonitor - Attempt to process jobs on errored or non existing worker process failed
SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.Exceptions.WorkerNotAvailableException: No worker process available
   at SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.WorkerProcessManagement.WorkerProcess.MakeCall[T](Func`1 methodCall)
   at SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.WorkerProcessManagement.WorkerProcess.GetHeartBeatValue()
   at SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.WorkerProcessManagement.WorkerMonitor.ProcessWorkerProcess(Guid workerId)
This article addresses the specific error above. There are other reasons why a transaction can enter an Unknown status.

Cause

WPM Playback service has run out of Worker Processes.

Resolution

Evaluate how many users are currently set on the player location by opening the configuration file located at the installation directory on the Player Location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\SEUM\Player\SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.Service.exe.config
>search: numWorkerProcesses

What to do:
  • If the numWorkerProcesses is set to two, consider increasing the value to seven. Please be advised at note #1 below.
  • If the numWorkerProcesses is set to seven, consider installing a new Player location. Then, offload some of the currently assigned transactions to the new Player location. Please review note #2 below.
  • You may increase the numWorkerProcesses value up to a maximum of 15.
Full steps on increasing the number of worker processes is outlined here:
Increase WPM worker processes for high player load

Notes:
  • The default numWorkerProcesses for the main Orion polling engine is two. Therefore, if the users is currently set to two, that means this is probably your main Orion server. It is not recommended to use your Main Orion server as a major Player location. It is advised to create a new designated Player location and assign the bulk of your transactions to these "agent" servers or workstations.
  • It is recommended that you keep the users at the default value of 7. This is the default value and the recommended value. If you require more users, consider establishing a new Player location. The number of Players is not considered in licensing consumption, these are free to install unlimited. Add Player locations.
