This version of the SolarWinds Installer cannot be used to upgrade older scalability engines

When running the installer to deploy an additional polling engine, additional web server, or High Availability standby server, a 'This version of the SolarWinds Installer cannot be used to upgrade older scalability engines' error message pops up stopping the installation.

Overview

When running the installer to deploy an additional polling engine, web server, or High-Availability standby server,staller cannot be used to upgrade older scalability engines' error message pops up, a 'This version of the Orion In stopping the installation. This message persists even after having the latest versions of the SolarWinds Platform.

The AdministrationService.Client.log will also contain the error message below:

ERROR (null) SolarWinds.InformationService.Contract2.InfoServiceProxy - An error occurred opening a connection to the Orion communication service. System.ServiceModel.Security.MessageSecurityException: An unsecured or incorrectly secured fault was received from the other party.

Communication process failed for the primary Orion server This version of the Orion installer cannot be used to upgrade older scalability engines.

Communication process failed for the primary Orion server  This version of the Orion Installer cannot be used to upgrade older scalability engines. Either upgrade your Main Polling Engine to the latest version of the Orion Platform, or use a previous version of the Orion Installer. To get a supported version of the installer, in the Orion Web Console go to Settings > All Settings > Polling Engines. http://<Orion servername>/Orion/Admin/Details/Engines.aspx

Cause

Possible reasons:

  • The SolarWinds Platform account used to connect to the Main Poller upon running the installer does not sufficient administrative rights or not the same rights as the default Admin.
  • The SolarWinds Platform account used may be disabled.
  • The unknown reason why if the same permission is applied to both the default Admin account and the customers admin account.
  • Option 2: system time mismatched between the main polling engine and the APE
  • Option 3: The installer used on the Additional Poller is not the same version as the Main Poller.

Resolution

Option 1

Use the built-in or default SolarWinds 'Admin' account credentials to connect to the main polling engine. Please refer to the screenshot below:

You should be able to get past this error message when you use the default SolarWinds Platform 'Admin' account and continue with the installation.

Option 2

Check in the APE administration log if the following error found, if the answer is yes, correct the system time of the servers, the time differences between the servers should not higher than 5min.

[6] ERROR (null) SolarWinds.Administration.Installer.ErrorHandler.HttpResponseAdapter - Unsecured version of application was used.
System.ServiceModel.Security.MessageSecurityException: The security timestamp is invalid because its creation time ('YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ') is in the future. Current time is 'YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ' and allowed clock skew is '00:05:00'. 

Option 3

Make sure the installer you are using to install the Additional Poller is the same version as the Main Polling engine. If in process of upgrading the environment please first upgrade the Main Poller and then the rest of the environment. 

If the SolarWinds Platform account used is disabled the Installer log will show the following:

An Error occured opening a connection to the orion main polling engine server.
An unsecured or incorrectly secured fault was received from the other party.
FaultException: User Account is disabled.

Either enabled the account being used or change the account to another SolarWinds Platform Admin account.
