The SolarWinds Recommendations folder is filling up with log files

This article describes the issue on the Recommendations folder in ProgramData where it is being consumed by Diags JobResultsOutput subfolder. There is an increase in space by design in big environments and details of every computation job are logged in there which causes C: Drive to fill up. Overview

The Recommendations folder capacity in ProgramData is being consumed by the Diags JobsResultsOutput subfolder. There is an increase in space by design in huge environments and the details of every computation are logged which causes the C: drive to fill up. 

On addition Active Diagnostics could present the following message:
Check size of JobResultsOutput folder
Status: Warning 
Explanation: Size of Job Results Output folder is (n) b that exceeds of (n)Gb, Please clean up this folder

Cause

  • SolarWinds Recommendation Service storing logs and its retention settings.


 

Resolution

The Recommendations service is a new feature added for IVIM in NPM 12.0 which inspects polled environments and recommends actions to resolve issues and improve the overall state.
Issues associated with the Recommendations service usually occur in larger SolarWinds Platform environments. 
If the Diags subfolder is larger than usual or the Solarwinds Log folder is filling up on C: drive, perform the following procedure(s): 

First, clean out the old log files:

  1. Delete log files from following location: 
    • C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\Recommendations\
***NOTE***
This is a stop-gap measure and should be performed to stop this from recurring. It is not necessary to stop the services when deleting these files.

Second, apply one of these solutions:

  1. You can also edit Recommendations Settings and disable it in Log Adjustor (shown below).
    1. Decrease the amount of days/hours by editing the following settings in the Centralized Settings Page.
      • The log files being stored on the disk can be configured via Centralized settings.
        • The Settings editor pages are hidden and can only be accessed through the following URL:
        • {OrionWebsite}/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx 
      • For NPM 12.0.x and earlier:
        • OldJobsLogDeletionDaysRealtime
        • OldJobsLogDeletionDaysRegular
      • For NPM 12.1 and NPM 12.2, setting the below to 1:
        • OldJobsLogDeletionHoursRealtime 
        • OldJobsLogDeletionHoursRegular
        • and OldJobsLogDeletionCron to 0 * * * *
  2. Turn off logging for the Recommendations engine using Log Adjuster: 
    1. On the SolarWinds server, go to SolarWinds Platform > Log Adjuster in the Start menu. 
    2. Change the Recommendations Jobs value from DEBUG to OFF\INFO, and then click Apply.
  3. If you are not using this feature, Disable "SolarWinds Recommendations" service in Services.msc
