Log in to the SQL Server with your Windows account. Confirm that the user account and password is correct and have no issues at all using your Windows Authentication to SQL server.

You have also confirmed that the SQL server have both mixed mode authentication so both the SQL and Windows users can log in. However, the issue persists when any of the SQL servers is trying to log in.

Resolution

You will need to restart your SQL Server according to the MSDN link on Changing server authentication mode (©2016 Microsoft, available at www.microsoft.com, obtained on August 1, 2016).

  1. To change security authentication mode:
  2. In SQL Server Management Studio Object Explorer, right-click the server, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Security page, under Server authentication, select the new server authentication mode, and then click OK.
  4. In the SQL Server Management Studio dialog box, click OK to acknowledge the requirement to restart SQL Server.
  5. To restart SQL Server from SQL Server Management Studio:
In Object Explorer, right-click your server, and then click Restart. If SQL Server Agent is running, it must also be restarted.
  6. Restart SQL Server and then try to log in again will resolve this issue.

There is another article on Choosing an authentication mode (© 2016 Microsoft, available at www.microsoft.com , obtained on August 1, 2016). See user comments at the bottom, referencing a registry key that you can look at. It also says you will need to restart the service once you have changed it.
