Syslog and traps are not forwarding to hostname

This article will show how to correct an issue with OLV where the Syslog and Traps are not forwarding to hostname showing Importing 'CSM Syslog Forwarding' ... FAILED and/or Invalid address to forward to: *HOSTNAME*.

Overview

The OLV logs will show the following error when it fails to forward logs to another server:

[03/30/22 19:05:23] Invalid address to forward to: *HOSTNAME* (166a527a-d164-4951-b0bf-4581c128924d)
[03/30/22 19:05:23] Importing 'CSM Trap Forwarding' ... FAILED
[03/30/22 19:05:23] Invalid address to forward to: *HOSTNAME* (2a63f663-34ac-47da-961c-21bd1757e685)
 
ForwardTo set to: SHORT
[03/30/22 19:06:04] Importing 'CSM Syslog Forwarding' ... FAILED
[03/30/22 19:06:04] Invalid address to forward to: *HOSTNAME* (166a527a-d164-4951-b0bf-4581c128924d)

Cause

DNS issue, unable to ping

Resolution

1. Verify log forwarding is correct
2.Run tests:
2a. NSlookup the target hostname on CMD on polling engine
2b. Pingtest target hostname from polling engine
3. From here we have 3 options:
3a. Correct DNS issue
3b. Use IP address instead of hostname
3c. Update hosts file
