Specific volume is not triggered (FixedDisk or Fixed Disk) in the SolarWinds Platform

This article describes an issue where a specific volume type does not send an alert message. If some of your network devices return Fixed Disk and other FixedDisk as the VolumeType, alerts may not trigger as expected. Adjust the out-of-the-box alert Alert me when the free space of a volume is less than 5% to resolve the issue.

Overview

If some of your network devices return a value for VolumeType as "Fixed Disk" and others return "FixedDisk," alerts with VolumeType specified in their trigger condition are not triggered as expected. This article describes how to resolve an issue where a specific volume type does not send an alert message.
SolarWinds Platform products come with an out-of-the-box alert that requires an adjustment to properly alert on fixed disks. This alert is called "Alert me when the free space of a volume is less than 5%"

Resolution

  1. Go to the Manage Alerts screen (Settings > All Settings > Manage Alerts).
  2. Find the out-of-the-box alert called "Alert me when the free space of a volume is less than 5%"
  3. Select the alert and click DUPLICATE & EDIT.
  4. Enable the alert (duplicated alerts are disabled by default).
  5. Navigate to the Trigger Conditions page.
  6. Within the actual trigger condition field, click the plus sign and "Add And/Or block."

  7. Change the 'And/Or' block drop-down to "At least one child condition must be satisfied (OR)"
  8. Drag the second line of the alert condition into this 'And/Or' block (Volume; Volume Type; is equal to; Fixed Disk).

  9. Now edit the single value comparison to the following: Volume, Volume Type, is equal to, "FixedDisk."  

  10. Click Next to get to the end of the alert on the Summary tab. Click SUBMIT.

    The new alert triggers for both specified volume types (Fixed Disk and FixedDisk).

  11. Back on the Manage Alerts page, disable the out-of-the-box alert called "Alert me when the free space of a volume is less than 5%". Use the new copied alert in place of the SolarWinds out-of-the-box alert for fixed disks.

Apply this amendment to all your Fixed Disk alerts. To find other alerts, sort your alerts by the "Property to Monitor" on the Manage Alerts page. Look for alerts that are based on Volumes.
