SolarWinds Platform offline installer shows "SolarWinds Platform is up to date" with only a Cancel option when the offline installer is run on an APE before the MPE

This article provides information about a SolarWinds Platform issue where the offline installer shows "SolarWinds Platform is up to date" instead of starting an upgrade, when it is run on an Additional Polling Engine (APE) before the Main Polling Engine (MPE).

Overview

SolarWinds Platform upgrades must always start on the MPE, which then upgrades the scalability engines (APEs and Additional Web Servers). If the offline installer is run on an APE first, the Welcome screen incorrectly reports that the platform is up to date and offers only a Cancel option, with no indication that it is being run in the wrong order. The behavior is the same regardless of the versions involved.

Cause

An APE cannot be upgraded ahead of its MPE. When the installer is run on the APE first, it does not recognize the wrong-order scenario and reports the platform as up to date instead of directing the user to the MPE.

Resolution

  1. Run the upgrade on the MPE first, using the same offline installer.
  2. Once the MPE is upgraded, the centralized upgrade upgrades reachable Additional Polling Engine(s) in parallel. If an APE is not upgraded automatically, run the same offline installer on the APE after the MPE upgrade has completed.
  3. Validate the upgrade in the Web Console under Settings > My Deployment > Polling Engines.
