SolarWinds Platform installer upgrade fails with "Cannot get packages from main poller. Could not validate product catalog"

During a Scalability Engine (APE, AWS, and HA standby) upgrade to 2026.1.1, the installer may fail when retrieving packages from the main poller. The reported error indicates that the product catalog cannot be validated, which prevents the upgrade from continuing. The issue can be worked around by temporarily blocking access to downloads.solarwinds.com, restarting the SolarWinds Administration Service on the Main Polling Engine, rerunning the installer, and then removing the block after the upgrade completes.

Overview

The SolarWinds Platform offline installer failed during the upgrade workflow and displayed an error stating that it could not get packages from the main poller and could not validate the product catalog.

The installer screen shows the failure on the Welcome page with the message: "Cannot get packages from main poller. Could not validate product catalog."

Figure 1 below shows the installer error observed during the case.

Cause

The failure occurs because the installer cannot validate the product catalog while retrieving packages from the main poller. This results in a MainPollerConnectionFailedException and stops the AWS upgrade from proceeding.

Resolution

Resolution

1. Temporarily block access to https://downloads.solarwinds.com/.
* This can be done either by adding a hosts file entry mapping the site to 127.0.0.1 from the MPE and Scalability engines (APE, AWS, and HA standby) or by creating an outbound firewall rule.
2. Restart the SolarWinds Administration Service on the Main Polling Engine and the Scalability engines.
3. Re-run the APE installer.
4. Confirm that the installer completes successfully and that the centralized upgrade is detected for scalability engines.

Note: After the APE upgrade finishes, remove the hosts file entry or firewall block.
