SolarWinds Free Tools: Issues due to revoked code-signing certificates

As part of our response to the SUNBURST cyberattack, we've made the decision to digitally re-sign SolarWinds free tools; the existing certificate is currently scheduled to be revoked on March 8, 2021. Installation of affected versions of SolarWinds free tools may be forbidden by system policy. This article describes steps to address the possible issues in SolarWinds free tools.

As a best practice and to further enhance the security of our products, we have retained third-party cybersecurity experts to assist us in these matters. These experts are guiding us in improving our processes and controls.

As part of our response to the SUNBURST cyberattack, we’ve made the decision to digitally re-sign SolarWinds free tools. You can read more about this decision here. We have requested (and received) a new digital certificate. This reflects a recertification of the authenticity of SolarWinds products, both current and future.

What to expect next:  

  • We will be issuing new product releases for SolarWinds free tools containing the updated certificate.
  • The existing certificate is currently scheduled to be revoked on March 8, 2021.
If you fail to upgrade to the newest versions, SolarWinds free tools users might notice the following issues:
  • Users are unable to start affected version of tool.
  • Users are unable to install affected version of tool.
  • Upgrade path is not supported (except for Free Tools integrated with Orion Platform such as TFTP and SFTP).
  • User must uninstall previous version and install the latest release.

Resolution

If you are experiencing any of these issues, SolarWinds strongly recommends uninstalling the previous version and installing the latest available version of your free SolarWinds tools, as an upgrade path is not supported (except for free tools integrated with Orion Platform, such as TFTP and SFTP). You can find the latest versions of free tools here.
