Overview
This article describes how to set up the SolarWinds Platform to send alerts to mobile devices by configuring a trigger action that sends text or email to recipients using either PageGate or a wireless communications provider. See Alerting resources for SolarWinds Platform products to learn about handling alerts with other products such as Slack.
This will work for any supported SolarWinds Platform product:
Any Currently supported software versions for SolarWinds Platform products.
Support for text or email, which you can configure by either:
- Purchasing, downloading, and installing PageGate on the SolarWinds Server and then integrating the product with the SolarWinds Platform. See Enabling SMS/Text alerts in Orion (THWACK) and SolarWinds Integration video tutorial for details. You can also send alerts to terminal phone numbers. See Tap Modem Phone Numbers.
- Using a wireless communications provider that offers email gateways to forward SMS messages from an email server. Please note that some providers are retiring these services, and may do so without notice. Here are some providers and the formats used for their gateways:
- AT&T Wireless 10DigitPhoneNumber@txt.att.net (AT&T ended support on June 17, 2025)
- Cingular 10DigitPhoneNumber@mobile.mycingular.com (AT&T ended support on June 17, 2025)
- Metrocall 10DigitPhoneNumber@page.metrocall.com
- Nextel 10DigitPhoneNumber@messaging.nextel.com
- Sprint PCS 10DigitPhoneNumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com (retired early 2022)
- T-Mobile 10DigitPhoneNumber@tmomail.net (Retired December 2024)
- Verizon 10DigitPhoneNumber@vtext.com (Intermittent failures possible with full retirement March 31, 2027)
- ALLTEL 10DigitPhoneNumber@message.alltel.com
- As an alternative to the SMS to email services noted above, you may try one of the following options:
- AT&T Business Messaging Lite — a low-cost paid replacement (~a dime/month per line) using a new @1waypage.att.net domain.
- A2P messaging providers — Twilio, SignalWire, Sinch, ClickSend, Notifyre, SMTP2GO, TextBolt, etc., which handle 10DLC registration and deliver across all carriers from a single domain.
- On-premise SMS gateways (e.g., SMSEagle) that send via a physical SIM, bypassing carrier gateways entirely.

Resolution
Note these details about sending alerts externally:
- Not all cellular service providers allow texts from the SolarWinds Platform to come through. You may need to contact the wireless provider to see if receiving texts through emails is offered.
- If your organization uses SolarWinds Web Help Desk, you can Integrate it with OpsGenie to send alerts.
- If the Microsoft Exchange server is down, you can configure alerts to send email using Gmail SMTP server. Alerting resources for SolarWinds Platform products.
Text alerts via 3rd party software (paid option):
- In the SolarWinds Platform Web Console, navigate to Settings > All Settings > Manage Alerts.
- Click Add New Alert and begin creating the alert.
- When you reach the Trigger Actions page, click Add Action.
- To use Notepager Pro, select Dial Paging or SMS Service.
The free option does not require a 3rd party software:
- To use an email gateway via a wireless provider, select Send an E-Mail/Page.
- When adding email addresses, use the format specified by your provider (for example, 9055556543@vtext.com)
