SRM: Enable an HDS onboard SMI-S provider

The HDS Embedded Provider runs on the VSP (Virtual Storage Platform) of the HDS array. The VSP also hosts the Device Manager Storage Navigator or Storage Navigator management interface. This SMI-S provider is installed by default.

Overview

The HDS Embedded Provider runs on the VSP (Virtual Storage Platform) of the HDS array. It should be used in conjunction with the Add your storage array for monitoring with SRM topic in the Success Center documentation or online help.

The VSP also hosts the Device Manager Storage Navigator or Storage Navigator management interface. This SMI-S provider is installed by default.

Credentials required to add array 

Ensure you have the following information:
  • IP address or hostname for the array.
  • Provider username
  • Provider password
  • Protocol. The default is HTTPS
  • HTTP port. The default is 5988
  • HTTPS port. The default is 5989
  • Interop namespace.  The default is /interop
  • Array namespace.  The default is /root/hitachi/smis

Enable the array 

The SMI-S provider is running on the VSP (Virtual Storage Platform) of the HDS array. The VSP also hosts the Device Manager Storage Navigator or Storage Navigator management interface. SMI-S provider is installed by default.  

Enable SMI-S 

  1. To enable the SMI-S functionality, the license key for this provider must be installed on the VSP.
    Open the Device Manager Storage Navigator or Hitachi Storage Navigator management interface.
  2. Go to Settings > Environmental Setting > License key.
  3. Ensure that the status of the SMI-S Provider is showing as Installed. If it is not installed, install the key from the same window. The license is available free of cost to HDS customers.

Enable the Performance Data Collection 

  1. Check User Privileges Open the Device Manager Storage Navigator or Hitachi Storage Navigator management interface.
  2. Click Performance Monitor on the left side menu.
  3. Check if the Monitoring Switch option is enabled. If this is not enabled, click the Edit Monitoring Switch option.
  4. Change Monitor Switch to Enable, and select a Sample Interval (for example, 1 minute).
  5. Click Finish.
  6. Wait for the task to complete and then make sure that the Performance Monitor screen shown in step 2 has the Monitoring Switch shown as enabled.
The user account used for polling the data must be part of the Storage Administrator (View only) User Group or the Storage Administrator (View & Modify) User Group

Do the following steps to view the user groups and/or create a new user:

  1. Open the Device Manager Storage Navigator or Hitachi Storage Navigator management interface.
  2. Click Administration on the left side menu.
  3. Click User Groups and then click Storage Manager groups.
  4. Check if the user is listed in the Users section. If not, use the Create User option to add this new user.
  5. Assign the user to a single group - for example, Storage Administrator (View & Modify).
