SRM: Enable a Dell Compellent array

The article contains information on adding a Dell Compellent array to SolarWinds Orion Storage Resource Monitor. Compellent arrays are monitored through SMI-S and REST API on the external Dell Storage Manager.

Overview

The article contains information on adding and enabling Dell Compellent arrays to your SolarWinds Orion Storage Resource  Monitor network. It should be used in conjunction with the Add your storage array for monitoring with SRM topic in the Success Center documentation or online help.

Compellent arrays communicate with SRM using the REST API and SMI-S provider included with the Dell Storage Manager, running on an external server. SMI-S is configured either during initial installation or after installation by modifying the Data Storage Manager properties.

Credentials required to add the array  

Ensure you have the following information before adding the array to SRM.

  • IP address or hostname for the provider.
  • SMI-S username
  • SMI-S password

    If you use the same username and password for SMI-S and API credentials, a check box is available to avoid having to enter the same information twice.

  • REST API username (SRM 6.8+ only)
  • REST API password (SRM 6.8+ only)
  • Protocol. The default is HTTPS
  • HTTP port. The default is 5988
  • HTTPS port. The default is 5989
  • Interop namespace. The default is: /interop
  • Array namespace. The default is: /root/compellent

    compellent must be lowercase, otherwise SmisClient throws an exception.

  • Array API HTTPS Port. The default is 3033 (SRM 6.8+ only)

Enable the SMI-S provider 

  1. Create a new account in Dell Storage Manager/Unisphere with the Administrator role and a password that is no longer than 8 characters and contain no special characters.
  2. Login to DSM/Unisphere as this user.
  3. Add all the Storage Centers into the profile for this user.
  4. Verify that SMI-S is enabled.
  5. Add the arrays to SRM as described in the Add your storage array for monitoring with SRM documentation using the credentials and settings listed above.

 

Create a REST API account  (SRM 6.8+ only) 

  1. Log into Unisphere Central for SC Series.
  2. Select Data Collector settings.
  3. Go to the Users and Systems tab.
  4. Create a user and assign one of the 3 available roles:
    • Reporter
    • Volume Manager
    • Administrator

    SRM works with all 3 roles.

  5. Add created user to SC.
  6. Once the above steps have been completed you should be able to add the array to SRM.
