Overview

When adding a node to the Orion Platform that will be polled using SNMPv3, consider the prerequisites and checks below.

Cause

SNMPv3 provides significantly better security because of authentication and encryption.

Resolution

SNMPv3 prerequisites

  • Verify that your device supports SNMPv3.
  • Verify that you have restarted the SNMP service on the device after changing the community string (IF Required / Applied).
  • Verify that you have disabled Windows firewall on both the Orion and a Windows target node.
  • Verify you are able to ping the node from the Orion Server.
  • When adding a remote site node, make sure that the firewall rules/NAT are configured to allow SNMP traffic. This could be an issue as the firewall could block the SNMP traffic over the VPN for the remote site or not allow even pass through.
  • Some firewalls require to enable ICMP/SNMP on an interface level. Even if you have configured SNMP, it should still be allowed on the interface level.

Make sure you provide Orion with the correct information on:

  • SNMPv3 User Name and Context
  • SNMPv3 Authentication Method and Password/Key
  • SNMPv3 Privacy/Encryption Method and Password/Key
