SAM's Asset Inventory Polling is not showing all installed Software on Linux Hosts

Overview

This article briefly explains one possible reason as to why you are not seeing all of the installed software on the Asset Inventory details page for your Linux host.

SAM's Asset inventory SNMP polling descriptions contains explicit definition, to skip items from inventory marked in OID hrSWInstalledType - 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.4 by values 2 or 3

  • 2 : operatingSystem
  • 3 : deviceDriver

 

Example:

hrSWInstalledName: .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.2.1531 = STRING: "falcon-sensor-4.21.0-6705.el7"
hrSWInstalledType: .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.4.1531 = INTEGER: 2


So if your device classes the 'missing' bit of Software as an item installed by the OS or as a device driver, it has ignored it and not displayed in order to reduce the amount 'noise' in the software resource.

As you can see from the above example of a device the 'Falcon Sensor' is classed as a "OperatingSystem" installation so will not be displayed in the Installed Software Resource.
 

You could edit the column 'AssetInventory_PollingDescription' to remove this filter but please note such change is not supported and will be overridden by running the Orion Configuration Wizard.

 

Support can confirm that this is the reason as to why the installed Software is not being displayed for your device - Please do the following:

1. Open a Ticket online   
2. Please send us a copy of an SNMPWalk of the device along with the name of the software. See Run SolarWinds SNMPWALK.
