SAM 2019.4 feature: API Poller

Use SAM to monitor external REST APIs and gather metrics for nodes and applications in your environment. With the API Poller feature, you can define REST API endpoints, pick values you want to monitor, provide credentials, and then let SAM begin monitoring without the need for custom scripts.

Overview

Now you can use SAM to monitor external REST APIs and gather metrics for nodes and applications in your environment, providing an easier way to collect data from a modern application stack in a simplified manner. With the API Poller feature, you can define your REST API endpoints, pick values you want to monitor, provide credentials, and then let SAM begin monitoring without the need for custom scripts.

Here are some ways you can use this new way to poll data that's integrated into PerfStack and Orion Maps on a deeper level than SAM's existing application and component monitor functionality: 
  • Extract data from applications that are not traditional WMI- or SNMP-based applications, such as SaaS app or public cloud services.
  • If a SAM application monitor template doesn't include a metric you need, add an API poller to monitor that value.
  • Many manufacturers (such as Nutanix) configure devices with REST APIs, as a substitute for WMI or SNMP. With the proper permissions, you can send an API call to update a hardware configuration.
When SAM receives a response from the API, it parses the JSON to glean relevant data that is assigned to the monitored node. You can then display status and metrics in several areas of the Orion Web Console, including Node Details pages, PerfStack, and Orion Maps.
