Overview

When monitoring Meraki MX75, MX85, MX95, and MX105 devices as API-only nodes, users may notice that the indexes for WAN interfaces (uplinks) do not match those reported by SNMP. This discrepancy occurs because these models have two physical ports behind each WAN interface: an RJ45 (copper) port and an SFP (fiber) port. See WAN Behavior on MX75/85/95/105 for more details.

Cause

Since it is not possible to determine programmatically whether the RJ45 or SFP port is in use, versions prior to 2025.2 assumed that SFP ports were activated by default. As a result, for example, on an MX85:

  • WAN1 was assigned index 1

  • WAN2 was assigned index 2

If you used RJ45 instead of SFP, the default index mapping would be incorrect, because RJ45 ports use 3 and 4 indexes appropriately.

Resolution

Adjusting Interface Mapping in 2025.1 and older versions

If you are not using SFP ports, you can manually adjust the interface indexes by configuring the UplinksInterfacesMapping setting on the Advanced Configuration (/orion/admin/advancedconfiguration/global.aspx) page of the SolarWinds Platform Web Console.

For the MX85/MX95/MX105 models, this involves swapping:

  • port1 with port3 (WAN1 SFP ↔ WAN1 RJ45)

  • port2 with port4 (WAN2 SFP ↔ WAN2 RJ45)

"MX85": { "wan1": "port3,port1", "wan2": "port4,port2" }

For the MX75 model which has two RJ45 ports and one SFP, this involves setting:

  • port2,port1 for WAN1

  • port3 for WAN2

"MX75": { "wan1": "port2,port1", "wan2": "port3" }

This adjustment ensures that the correct interfaces are monitored.

Solution in 2025.2

In 2025.2, the above configuration for MX75/MX85/MX95/MX105 is set by default, so indexes will be valid for devices that use RJ45 ports. If you would like to use SFP ports, you need to adjust the UplinksInterfacesMapping setting on the Advanced Configuration appropriately.

For MX85/MX95/MX105 you need to swap:

  • port3 with port1 (WAN1 RJ45 ↔ WAN1 SFP)

  • port4 with port2 (WAN2 RJ45 ↔ WAN2 SFP)

"MX85": { "wan1": "port1,port3", "wan2": "port2,port4" }

For MX75 you need to swap:

  • port2 with port1 (WAN1 RJ45 ↔ WAN1 SFP)

"MX85": { "wan1": "port1,port2", "wan2": "port3" }
