Remove unneccessary updates from the WSUS server

If you are experiencing problems with your drive consuming too much space on the WSUS server, perform the steps in this article to run the Server Cleanup Wizard and remove unnecessary updates based on rules.

Overview

If you are experiencing any of the following problems
1. Drive consuming too much space on the WSUS server hosting WSUS content
2. WSUS views show inaccurate information
ex: Some Windows 10 Computers show not status
3. WSUS connection timeout errors
4. Most clients failed to install updates with possibly different errors.
you can use the Server Cleanup Wizard to get rid of unnecessary updates based on rules. This will free up space on your disk and clean up the WSUS server to some extent.

Patch Manager

Cause

  • WSUS DB is full
  • Disk holding WSUS content is full
  • Patch Manager console frequently times out when you select any of the WSUS views

Resolution

  1. Log in to Patch Manager as an administrator
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Enterprise > Update Services and select your WSUS server.
  3. In the Actions Pane, click Server Cleanup Wizard.
  4. In the WSUS Server Cleanup Options window, select your cleanup options, and click OK.
  5. In the Task Options Wizard, run the task now or create a schedule for the task.
  6. Complete the wizard.
