Purpose of Macro, OIP, and Reporting database roles in the SolarWinds Platform database

This article explains the purpose of the Macro, OIP, and Reporting database roles and users in the SolarWinds Platform database and confirms they are required even when only the NCM module is installed.

Overview

The SolarWinds Platform automatically creates several database roles and users as part of platform security hardening. These roles are required for core platform functions such as alerting, reporting, and telemetry, even in NCM-only environments.

Cause

Administrators may see the following roles and users in the SolarWinds Platform database:

Macro      – MacroClient
OIP        – OIPClient
Reporting  – ReportingClient

Resolution

Please note that removing these roles or users can break platform functionality and may cause the Configuration Wizard and future upgrades to fail.

Macro role / MacroClient user

  • Used by the Alerting Engine to execute SQL macro variables.
  • Runs under a low-privileged database role for security.
  • Required for alerting, including NCM alerts.

OIP role / OIPClient user

  • Used by the Orion Improvement Program (OIP) to read limited telemetry data.
  • Read-only with restricted access to sensitive tables.
  • Required regardless of licensed modules.

Reporting role / ReportingClient user

  • Used to execute SQL query–based reports.
  • Introduced in SolarWinds Platform 2023.2 as a security enhancement.
  • Required for reporting functionality in NCM.
