Prevent Orion from using the SQL Server Browser service

This article describes how to prevent Orion from using the Microsoft SQL Server™ Browser service, which has been introduced in Microsoft SQL Server™ 2005. The service listens on UDP port 1434 and is used to identify the ports where named instances of Microsoft SQL Server™ are listening.

Overview

You can stop Orion from using the Microsoft SQL Server™ Browser service, which has been introduced in Microsoft SQL Server™ 2005. The service listens on UDP port 1434 and is used to identify the ports where named instances of Microsoft SQL Server™ are listening.

Resolution

  1. From your DBA, obtain details of the port on which the SQL server named instance listens in the following format:
    SERVER\INSTANCE_NAME,PORT
  2. Log in to the Orion server.
  3. Run the Orion Configuration Wizard.
  4. On the first screen, select Database.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter details from Step 1 into the SQL Server field.
  7. Complete the Configuration Wizard.

 

Note: If the installation contains multiple Orion servers, repeat the steps for each server.
