Poll for Asset Inventory data for a SAM node
This article describes the Asset Inventory view on the Node Details page in SAM that displays software/application inventory data that is automatically enabled during Network Sonar Discovery and/or the upgrade process. Data displayed includes system, hardware, memory, network interfaces, applications, custom assets, logical volumes, and more. Details displayed depend on the polling method used to collect data from the node.

Overview
The Asset Inventory view on the Node Details page in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console displays a variety of data including system, hardware, memory, network interfaces, applications, custom assets, and logical volumes. This article provides details about how the SolarWinds Platform collects data for resources in the Asset Inventory view.

The Asset Inventory dashboard (also called a "sub-view") lets you maintain a current and detailed inventory of your environment's hardware and software. Asset Inventory data collection is automatically enabled during the Network Sonar Discovery and/or the upgrade process.
Automatic inventory data collection benefits those interested in tracking asset depreciation, gathering information for insurance purposes, or managing and maintaining your infrastructure. To display this dashboard, see Enable and disable the Asset Inventory dashboard.
The Asset Inventory sub-view displays a variety of data for a node, including system, hardware, memory, network interfaces, applications, custom assets, logical volumes, and more. Details displayed depend on the polling method used to collect data from the node.
Note the following details about Asset Inventory data:
- SAM uses standard protocols such as SNMP and WMI for Asset Inventory collection, but not all information is available natively from the OS without installing the hardware vendor's required agent software. One such example of this is the serial number of the machine, which is not recognized by the Windows OS. SAM cannot determine the machine's warranty status without a serial number until APIs are extended with additional information made available by the vendor-specific agent software. See Asset inventory and hardware health monitoring requirements to learn about supported agent software.
- If expected asset data does not appear for a node to which a SolarWinds Platform agent was deployed, confirm that the agent is configured properly and SNMP or WMI is enabled on the remote device. See Asset Inventory requirements.
- Internet Information Services (IIS) use drivers and other “non-software” records that may result in duplicate records being displayed in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console and saved to the SolarWinds Platform SQL database.
- WMI polls many WMI classes and registers for asset data. For the Software Inventory resource, SAM polls information from the following registry branches:
- SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
- SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
- If multiple registry keys share the same display name, filter by display name, version, and related Windows updates so only records for a specific asset appear in the Software Inventory resource and are saved in the SolarWinds Platform SQL database.
