Ping stops working on the Orion Polling Engine

This article describes how to resolve an issue that caused Ping to stop or hang when the Orion Services are running. When this issue occurs, the assigned node statuses are stale at the last polled status.

Overview

When Orion Services are running, PING stops or hangs.When services stop, the PING service resumes and works again. When this issue occurs, the assigned node statuses are stale at the last polled status.

Cause

The JobEngineV2 service fills up due to permissions or antivirus in the environment, which prevents jobs from processing correctly. As a result, the Microsoft Windows TCP sharing service stops PING when enough stress is placed on the system.

Resolution

Resolution 1: Repair the JobEngine service: Resolution 2: Run the permission checker and repair any failing permissions: Resolution 3:​​​​​​ It is highly recommended to review your firewall settings and antivirus software to determine the cause of JobEngineV2 filling up. If necessary reach out to your security team.

Attention:
If you are using SolarWinds Platform 2023.2, it is likely related to a known issue affecting the JobEngine service (refer to SolarWinds Platform 2023.2 Release Notes ). It is advisable to update the SolarWinds Platform to the most recent version.
