Orion install fails: Could not open key (Error 1042)

The following message is displayed when upgrading or installing SolarWinds products: Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\CC30B64A5881EE040BBAB3DD5F9398FA\66359AEB55D2A9645B9E1426DAA93666. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

UNKNOWN\Components\CC30B64A5881EE040BBAB3DD5F9398FA\66359AEB55D2A9645B9E1426DAA93666.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel

Cause

This error can occur because of the following:

  • You do not have sufficient access rights to read or write some registry keys.
  • The account used to initially install the product was deleted or renamed but is still the registry key owner.

Resolution

Log in as a user with administrator rights before uninstalling the product, or perform the following steps to update the registry key owner:

Note: The options may vary depending on your version of Windows.

  1. Launch REGEDIT.
  2. Go to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components
  3. Right-click Components and select Permissions.
  4. Click the Advanced button and go to the Owner tab.
  5. Under Change owner to, select Administrators (for a group) or the user you are logged in as, and then click Apply.
  6. Select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box, and then click Apply.
  7. Go to the Permissions tab, select the Replace all child objects Permissions with inheritable permissions from this object box, and then click Apply.
