Overview

The Orion Syslog service is flapping from start to stop because of having Kiwi Syslog on the same server and sharing the same port.

Network Performance Monitor

Cause

Kiwi Syslog is using the same port that Orion Syslog is using, which is a port conflict.

Resolution

  1. Follow the article SolarWinds Syslog Service intermittently stops
  2. Check all Solarwinds modules installed on the Orion server.
    • If Kiwi Syslog is installed but either unlicensed, expired license or evaluation license:
      • If you have no plans of purchasing or renewing the Kiwi Syslog license. You can uninstall Kiwi Syslog to remove the conflict with Orion Syslog service
      • If you will purchase or renew your Kiwi Syslog license, you have to choose of whether changing the port used by Kiwi Syslog or Orion Syslog. Please refer to the articles:
        1. Change the SolarWinds syslog server port
        2. Refer to step 2 of the documentation Troubleshoot Kiwi Syslog Server
          • Verify that Kiwi Syslog Server is configured to listen for UDP messages on port 514
          • If yes, change the port to desired port besides UDP 514
    • If Kiwi Syslog is not installed, gather the Orion Diagnostics and send to Solarwinds Support for analysis:
