Orion Platform Troubleshooting - Maps

This article outlines some common troubleshooting issues that users may encounter while using Orion Maps or Network Atlas.

Overview

Loading the Network Atlas Map

Orion renders the map using a 3rd party component:

  1. Loads the map and checks for the objects that are in the map.
  2. Loads information on the objects (their graphics, background image, etc).
  3. Loads information on other objects that may influence status of the visible objects (for instance reads status of all interfaces, applications, and volumes of the actual node).
  4. When the status for all map objects is calculated, a new image is created.

If there is another map placed on the map being generated, Orion does not need to read all of it. For instance it does not need to load the background, or the icons representing the nodes. 

Reading the data from the database takes the most amount of time. Rendering in the layers such as the background or nodes does not speed the process up.

Nework Atlas feature: Map Caching

You may turn on displaying a cached map, while a new one is being loaded. This way, there is always a map displayed.

Once the new map is created, it is displayed instead of the cached image.

To turn on map caching, click the Edit button on the Network Map resource and look for a checkbox on the edit page.

Network Atlas Connection / not opening

    • Also check SWIS Info Service Logs Network Atlas or loading web maps can consume resources for SWIS.

Other Windows Folders relating to Network Atlas:

Network Atlas maps have a lot of different parts to them. In particular it uses other folders to sync and load maps from. Network Atlas builds maps in TEMP Folders while generating them to display on Orion Website.

  • C:\Windows\Temp\Solarwinds\NetworkAtlas

Network Atlas syncs items such as custom graphics and icons from:

  • <Volume>:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\ ....  
  • <Volume>:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\SolarWinds\NetworkAtlas\Maps\Orion\localhost\

Orion Maps log files

  • C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC2\*.log
    • Logs search and filter strings: "/ui/maps/" and "/api2/maps/v1/"
  • C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\Orion\ApolloWebApi.log  
    • Logs requests and responses 
    • API Logging of Exceptions, and Debug Information, this is a typical debug log for building a graph for an Orion.Node that is a server.
  • C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\InformationService\v3.0\Orion.InformationService.log
    • SWIS Log 
      • A list of the SWQL queries and how they are translated into SQL or FastBit queries
      • Information Services DEBUG - Use SolarWinds Log Adjuster
