Orion Platform 2018.2 feature: Container Monitoring

This article describes Orion Platform support for monitoring containers deployed to Linux nodes in the Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes (K8s), Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS), and Apache Mesos environments. After initial configuration, you can monitor performance metrics such as CPU, memory, network loads, and uptime. Display in-depth data on Container Details pages and analyze container data in the AppStack Environment and Performance Analysis dashboards (Perfstack). Group containers together on Orion Maps.

Overview

Containers are lightweight, executable packages of software that include everything needed to run an application: code, system tools, system libraries, and settings. Instead of shipping a full OS and software, application containers include an application's code, configurations, and dependencies into a single package, resulting in enhanced environmental consistency, operational efficiency, and version control.

Similar to VMs, containers isolate applications and their dependencies into self-contained units that can run anywhere without interfering with each other. Unlike VMs that each have their own virtual OS and hardware, containers share the host system kernel with other containers to save space, increase efficiency, and improve developer productivity.

Starting with SAM 6.7 and VMAN 8.3, the Orion Platform supports container monitoring for Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and Apache Mesos environments hosted on Linux nodes. Support for Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS) was added in SAM 6.9 and VMAN 8.4.

After adding one or more container services in the Orion Web Console, you can:

  • Display details about your container infrastructure, including hosts, host clusters, environment dependencies, and deployments.
  • Monitor container performance metrics such as CPU usage, memory, network load, and uptime.
  • View in-depth data about individual containers on the Container Details page.
  • Analyze container activity in the AppStack Environment and Performance Analysis (PerfStack) dashboards.
  • Organize containers on Orion Maps.
