Syslog or Trap messages are not in the alerts email for Orion Log Viewer or Log Analyzer

This article shows how you can include the message in the Syslogs and Traps in the alerts emails.

Overview

When setting up a rule in the Orion Log Viewer or Log Analyzer, there is an option to create an emailed alert, but the emailed alert by default does not show the trap/syslogs message.

Cause

The variable for the syslog or trap message needs to be added to the email action in the alert.

Resolution

  1. Go to Alerts > Manage Alerts page.
  2. Search for the name of the OLV rule created.
  3. Select and edit the alert.
  4. Forward to the "Alert Actions" tab.
  5. Create a new action if no email action is available to edit. 
  6. Forward to the message part of the email action.
  7. Insert ${N=OLM.AlertingMacros;M=OLMAlertMessage.EventMessage} into the message or search for "log" in the variables to find the "LogEntry Message".
  8. Add action to alert, then save changes at the end of the alert summary tab. 

Syslog and trap alert emails will now contain the Syslog/Traps message in the email.
