Overview

When inviting a remote user via MRC's temporary internet session, if the remote party immediately encounters the error "internet session link is expired," then either the Dameware internet proxy or the remote host has the HTTP/2 network protocol enforced by default. Although HTTP/2 service is supported by Windows 10, Server 2012 R2, Windows 2016, and Windows Server 2019 hosts, it must be disabled via Windows Registry. This is also the case for the "Remote host is unreachable" error that may be displayed when you attempt to establish an unattended session.

Note: You must use only one of the settings--either the server (internet proxy) or the client (remote host with MRC agent) setting, not both. SolarWinds recommends using the server-side setting because it ensures that the issue is solved for all client computers.

Cause

  • HTTP/2 is enabled on either the internet proxy or the remote host side.
  • MRC does not support HTTP/2 protocol for attended or unattended sessions.

Resolution

Perform the following procedure to add a new registry key on the internet proxy server.

Warning: SolarWinds strongly recommends that you back up your registry before editing it. Only edit the registry if you are experienced and confident in doing so. Using a registry editor incorrectly can cause serious issues with your operating system, which could require you to  reinstall your OS to correct them. SolarWinds cannot guarantee resolutions to any damage resulting from making registry edits.

  1. Log in to the system hosting the internet proxy, and open Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters
  3. Create or update a DWORD value with the following name: EnableHttp2Tls
  4. Set the DWORD value to 0.
  5. Close Registry Editor, and restart the machine.

Alternatively, the following procedure can be performed on the remote host if the internet proxy is inaccessible:

  1. Log in to the remote host, and open Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp
  3. Create or update a DWORD value with the following name: EnableDefaultHttp2
  4. Set the DWORD value to 0.
  5. Close Registry Editor, and restart the MRC agent service (or the entire machine).
