How Orion NPM obtain Network Topology information

CDP and LLDP protocol are used to get the Topology information as well as ARP and CAM

Overview

NPM obtains topology information about your network using CDP or LLDP via Network topology as well as ARP and CAM. The data is polled from each device via SNMP and Orion does not do any invasive network scanning to obtain this data. Core routers using autonomous routing protocols may cause increased load on the Orion server when processing this information.

Core routers or L3 switches that contain thousands of host records in ARP and CAM can slow down the topology calculation and may impact these devices when polling. When there are performance issues during topology polling (every 30 minutes by default), it is recommended that you disable topology polling for the affected device.

Topology polling can be disabled from the List Resources dialog:
