Network Atlas import to Intelligent Maps succeeds but edited map does not update on the original view in the SolarWinds Platform

Imported Network Atlas maps can save correctly in My Dashboards > Maps but still fail to update on the original dashboard if the old view is using a legacy resource path or if a required nested child map failed to import. Rebuilding the view with an Intelligent Map resource and importing child maps before the parent usually resolves the issue.

Overview

  • You may experience an error in Network Atlas: "Network Atlas has encountered a problem and needs to close."

  • The supported migration method is to import Network Atlas maps from the web console, not from the deprecated Network Atlas desktop conversion path.

  • After import, you may see one or more of the following:

    • The import takes a long time to finish

    • The imported map opens and saves successfully under My Dashboards > Maps

    • The map does not reflect edits on the original public/dashboard view

    • Nested child maps import, but the parent map is incomplete or missing

  • This article explains how to confirm whether the issue is with the imported map itself, the old dashboard/view, or a failed nested child map.

Cause

  • Network Atlas desktop is deprecated and is not the supported method for converting maps to Intelligent Maps.

  • The original dashboard/public page may still be using a legacy/classic map resource instead of a clean Intelligent Map resource.

  • For nested maps, a child map must be imported together with the parent or before the parent. If the child import fails, the parent map can appear incomplete or not show correctly.

  • Map creation and nesting must be done under My Dashboards > Maps. Tabs and dashboards only display an existing map widget.

Resolution

  1. Import the map from the web console under My Dashboards > Maps.

  2. If the edited map does not update on the old dashboard, create a new clean tab/view.

  3. In the new tab, click the + icon, search for Map, and add the Intelligent Map resource.

  4. Select the imported map and test the edit/save/display behavior there.

  5. If nested maps are involved:

    • Create or import each child map first

    • Open or create the parent map

    • In Entity Library, change the drop-down to Intelligent Maps

    • Drag the child maps onto the parent map canvas

    • Save the parent map with a unique name if needed

  6. If one child map fails to import, exclude that child temporarily and rebuild the parent map from the working child maps.

  7. If the new clean view works, replace or rebuild the old public/dashboard view using the same Intelligent Map configuration.
