NetApp State to NAS Volume Status Mapping in Storage Resource Monitor

This article describes how SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) maps NetApp-reported volume states to SRM NAS Volume statuses. This is important when reviewing NAS Volume health in the SolarWinds Platform or building alert conditions for NetApp NAS Volumes, because the backend NetApp state does not always match the status shown in SRM.

Overview

Storage Resource Monitor translates provider-returned NetApp states into SRM NAS Volume statuses.

Because of this translation, a NetApp state such as offline may appear in SRM as Warning rather than Down. If alerts are built against the wrong SRM status, the alert may not trigger even though the storage-side state is valid.

This article focuses on status translation for NetApp NAS Volumes only.

Use the following mapping when interpreting NetApp NAS Volume status in SRM:

When building alerts for NetApp NAS Volumes in SRM, use the SRM status that results from the mapping above rather than the original NetApp wording.

Recommended guidance:

  • Use NAS Volume status = Warning to detect NetApp states such as offline and restricted.

  • Use NAS Volume status = Down to detect the NetApp error state.

  • Treat Unknown as an indication that the returned provider state does not match one of the expected mapped values and should be reviewed further.

Additional Information

NAS Volume status is not refreshed continuously. The status updates when the SRM storage polling job runs.

In SRM, polling is performed per storage array, not per individual volume. Volumes such as LUNs, NAS Volumes, and File Shares inherit data collection from the parent array jobs rather than using a separate per-volume polling schedule.
