NPM: Reset and clear trap alerts

This article explains why you should clear and establish appropriate reset conditions for trap messages.

Overview

It is possible to receive thousands of traps in a very short time, that is why its important to acknowledge clearing traps or reset conditions.

Cause

Normal trap behavior in an environment. 

Resolution

  1. Specify which trap you want to alert on. For example: Power failure on a UPS.
  2. Navigate to Alerts & Activity > Traps > Settings > Traps > My Custom Rules.
  3. Create a new Rule.
  4. Integrate an alert into the created rule.
  5. On the Reset Condition tab of the alert, set the reset condition to automatically reset the alert if a clearing trap is received (power up), based on a Log Analyzer Processing Rule.

  1. SolarWinds automatically considers the node. For example, if a power failure triggers on UPS A, then a power up is received from UPS B -> the original alert will remain active.

If multiple traps are received, it won’t flood the NOC as individual alerts will not be triggered. It will only increase the trigger count. For example:
