Configure and Alert with SAM SolarWinds Platform Server Application Component Monitor

This article provides steps on how to configure the SAM Component to monitor the SolarWinds Platform Service status and set up an alert if the service is not running.

Overview

If you have SolarWinds software and would like to monitor the services and be alerted if any of the SolarWinds Services and their dependencies are down, you are in the right place. This article will provide step-by-step instructions on how to do this from your SolarWinds Platform web console.

All you need is to have a SolarWinds Platform account with Node management rights.

Resolution

Pre-requisites:
1. You need to a SAM License 
2. Main Polling Engine or Additional polling engines or Additional web servers monitored in SolarWinds via WMI or SolarWinds Platform agents.
3. Credentials (can be same as Polling Credentials )

Steps to Assign Orion Server Templates:
1. Login to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console with an account that as Node Management rights
2. Go to Settings > Under Product Specific Settings click on SAM Settings

3. Under Getting Started with SAM click on Manually Assign Application Monitors

4. This will open the Add New Application Monitors Wizard, Select the drop down and choose Orion to see the available Orion Server templates.

5. If you are running Orion Platform 2020.2.1 or below choose Legacy Orion Server 2020.2 Template
If you are running 2020.2.6 - Select the corresponding version and server template from the list shown in step 4 above.

Note the templates are based on Role of SolarWinds Servers. For example for Additional Web server select the corresponding template name i.e Additional Website

For Additional Poller select Additional Polling engine template.

6. Follow the wizard to Assign a template to a node as shown below and click next. You can assign to single or multiple nodes or Group of nodes if you have already placed SolarWinds Platform Servers in a group.

7. On the Select Credentials and Test page select the relevant option applicable to your case and verify credentials if necessary and click Assign Application Monitors and Click Done on next screen.

Please allow 2-5 minutes for initial SAM polling cycle to complete and show the status of various SolarWinds services. Once this is complete you may see some thing like this if you go Application Component summary page and select the SolarWinds Orion 2020.2.6 (in this example).

If you find any issues with any services like above (red), please investigate them individually and refer to Orion Platform SAM troubleshooting - Components if this does not help raise case with Solarwinds support.

Next step is to setup Alerting on an application  (SolarWinds video) component we configured above.
The video refers to setting up Alert for SQL Application component monitor, we simply need to replace that with the Orion Server 2020.2 or Orion Server 2020.2.6 for the Application component name field.

The remaining trigger conditions can be modified according to your needs and per SolarWinds alerting best practices for SAM.
