Orion upgrade error related to vsflex8.ocx failed to register

This article provides steps to resolve the following error that is displayed when upgrading Orion.

The full error message that can appear is:

Module C:\Program Files (x86)\Common files\SolarWinds\vsflex8.ocx failed to register. HRESULT - 2147024770. Contact your support personnel.

Cause

This occurs when the vsflex8l.ocx file (or other vsFlex*.ocx files) is missing from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SolarWinds\ directory.

Resolution

Establish a remote connection to the Orion server.
Click Start > Run.
Enter appwiz.cpl.
Right-click SolarWinds Orion Core Services and select Repair.
Run the Configuration Wizard.
Verify that vsflex8.ocx is now present in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SolarWinds\.
Run the installer again.
