Modifying and Navigating AppInsight Applications

Overview

This guide serves as a brief overview to adjusting thresholds for AppInsight templates within Server & Application Monitor.

There are 4 main AppInsight application templates.

-Active Directory
-Exchange
-IIS
-SQL

It is important to realize the scaling that occurs once each of these is assigned out. For instance, SQL and Exchange AppInsights scale with databases. Meaning these have individual thresholds that can be set per database on the server. This also occurs with IIS: it will have metrics for each individual site hosted by the IIS server.

Since the AppInsights have special scaling that occurs, it has a different application details page than all other applications—identifying the objects that the Template scales with helps when navigating the pages related to these applications.

Once the Template is assigned to a server, it becomes an active Application monitor. Clicking on the application from the Application Summary view will take you to the main overview page for the application; simply referred to as the 'Application Details' page. From there, you can click into more granular pages.

On AppInsight for SQL, for example, you will be presented with a list of Databases. Clicking on a database will then take you to the 'Database details' page.

On AppInsight for IIS, for example, you will be presented with a list of Sites and application pools. Clicking on a site or pool will then take you to the 'Site details' page or the 'Application pool details' page.

There are many levels in which you can modify thresholds for an AppInsight application.

-Parent Template level: this is global and usually NOT recommended.
-Application-level: this is the server-specific thresholds.
-Database/site/pool level: These are the granular detail thresholds. These can be accessed once you click down into the application details > Database/site/AppPool details pages > Edit thresholds. Once on the more granular details pages, you can then edit thresholds sepecific to that site/db/app pool / etc.

Parent Template thresholds can be modified from: Settings > All Settings > SAM Settings > Manage Templates > select and edit the desired AppInsight template > expand the component > set the threshold.

Application level thresholds can be modified from: SAM Summary > click the specific application > Edit Application monitor.

Database/site/pool level thresholds can be modified from: SAM Summary > click the specific application > click the specific object (database/site/app pool) > Edit button in the Management resource widget or Edit Thresholds in the upper right. Both buttons navigate to the same page.
